CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S. F. Rodrigues on Thursday called for harmoniously combining Le Corbusier’s creative and farsighted legacy with the changing needs of modern society. Addressing a function after inaugurating an exhibition, “From Marseilles to Chandigarh”, of creative works comprising a collection of models, drawings, photographs and original sketches of the world famous French architect, General Rodrigues asked the senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration, architects and academicians to retrieve the correspondence by Corbusier with different quarters and to micro-film the entire record for use by researchers and students of art and architecture. He called for a research-based structural study by experts to throw light on the original concept and vision conceived by Le Corbusier for undertaking this challenging job. This endeavour must also focus on various aspects of how Le Corbusier conceptualised the planning of the City Beautiful and how he proceeded with his blueprint to make Chandigarh a symbol of the past and a hope for the future. All these facts must be brought on record for using them in futuristic planning. . Gen Rodrigues said the Chandigarh Administration had already initiated steps to preserve the building, the furniture and artefacts used by Le Corbusier for executing his planning and other model structures of various projects conceived by him for the State capital.
