Power cuts in ‘theft prone’ areas decried

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Concerned over ongoing power cuts in various parts of the Capital that are considered “theft-prone”, Delhi Power Minister A. K. Walia on Thursday said that the power distribution companies were continuing with the practice in such colonies at their own whim and fancy, causing undue hardship and extreme inconvenience to the honest consumers living there.

The Minister, who has in the past directed the discoms to refrain from making such cuts, expressed surprise that no serious action had been taken to stop unscheduled power cuts that continue for prolonged hours.

Dr. Walia cautioned the discoms that they would not be able to justify this modus operandi of power cuts should any honest power consumer decide to take the matter to court.

He also emphasised the need to amend the rules for installation of electricity meters so that the tendency to commit theft of electricity is contained.

The discoms, the Minister pointed out, had been insisting on proof of legal occupation of the premises and asking for title of the property causing undue harassment and delay in sanctioning of domestic electricity connections.
