NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said her government would soon fill up 4,000 posts of Home Guards as they would be playing a vital role in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Ms. Dikshit, who was speaking at the Raising Day Parade of Home Guards and Civil Defence at Raja Garden here, said Home Guards had played an important role in the security of the city and exhorted them to play a more constructive role in its development.

Admitting that on many occasions the Home Guards work under a lot of strain and in adverse circumstances, she said it was necessary that they were suitably trained and equipped to deal with such demanding situations.

All help assured

Stating that the Government was aware of the problems being faced by the Home Guards, Ms. Dikshit assured them of all possible help and said that the 4,000 posts that had been lying vacant would soon be filled.

The Delhi Government would also review the functioning of Home Guards and Civil Defence to improve and modernise them.

The Chief Minister, who distributed the President’s Medals to the brave Home Guards, lauded the role of the personnel in traffic management in the recent past following a spate of accidents involving Blueline buses.
