A new foot made up of polyurethane under field-tests JAIPUR: Mahaveer Vikalang Sahayata Samiti, manufacturing the famous Jaipur Foot for the disabled, has provided walking aids to 10 lakh beneficiaries in the shape of artificial limbs, callipers, tricycles and other apparatus. The Samiti plans to establish its branches in all States and joint ventures abroad to extend the benefit to more people. Samiti president D. R. Mehta told reporters here on Wednesday that the 10-lakh figure was crossed recently as a result of constant up-gradation of the quality of Jaipur Foot and philanthropic bodies joining the work of fabricating the limbs and fitting on leg amputees. Mr. Mehta said the Samiti was expanding its operations abroad by setting up joint ventures in various countries. While a unit named Mahaveer K-Mina Artificial Limb Centre was established in Medeline, Colombia, this year, two centres are proposed to be opened shortly at Islamabad and Karachi in Pakistan. The Samiti, which presently has 16 braches all over the country, will open new branches in all major States in the next three years to enable the patients to get services from the nearby facilities. Mr. Mehta said the technical improvements had considerably reduced the cost of manufacturing Jaipur Foot, which is provided free to the beneficiaries. Mr. Mehta said the Samiti was also field-testing a new foot made of polyurethane, the design of which was provided by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
