Karur adjudged best district in rehabilitation of disabled

Staff Reporter

KARUR: The Centre has adjudged Karur as the ‘best district in providing rehabilitation services’ to the disabled in recognition of a slew of individual and community-based rehabilitation services provided to the physically and mentally challenged people in the district during the past year.

President Pratibha Patil gave away the award to Collector T.N. Venkatesh on the occasion of the World Disabled Day in New Delhi on Monday. The citation hailed the adoption of a “holistic approach to medical, psychological, educational, vocational and socio-economic rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.”

It also pointed out that the model created was replicable. The district administration “provided synergy in the implementation of all programmes of various government agencies and the voluntary sector so that a single window is provided for delivery of rehabilitation services,” it said.

Mr. Venkatesh said the national recognition would spur the administration into rededicating itself to the welfare of the differently abled, the poor, the downtrodden and the needy. The award, he felt, was for everyone who had spared a thought for the physically and mentally challenged.

“What we have done is simple: identify the needy and locate the scheme best suited for their development and create institutional support by dovetailing government schemes,” Mr. Venkatesh said.

Furthermore, the administration reactivated the district fund for the rehabilitation of the disabled and mobilised resources for rehabilitation and support services.

Support services to the differently abled for establishing petty shops, meeting medical expenses, providing tricycle, walkers, crutches and callipers and organising functions and events on festival occasions were carried out, Mr. Venkatesh said.
