Loud and clear: Members of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam staging a demonstration in Madurai on Thursday. MADURAI: The Congress party came in for a sharp criticism for not implementing the party leader, Sonia Gandhi’s poll promise of reconstructing the demolished Babri Masjid. Speakers at a demonstration organised by the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ) and Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) on the anniversary of the masjid demolition here on Thursday came down heavily on the Congress for not fulfilling its promise. The judiciary was also criticised for the prolonged legal battle on the disputed site. Hundreds of members of both the outfits participated in the protest demonstrations held at different places in the city. However, they gave up their plans for a procession as the police denied them permission. At the TNTJ demonstration, the speakers said that besides the Congress, its allies such as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Left parties and the Pattali Makkal Katchi that were in the helm of affairs did not press for construction of the masjid. The Jamaath also demanded that the political leaders behind the demolition be brought to book. The State secretary of TNTJ, Mohammed Muneer, led the protest. TMMK demonstrationThe demonstration organised by the TMMK was led by its State general secretary and Chairman of Tamil Nadu Wakf Board, S. Hyder Ali. They wanted the masjid premises back to the Muslims of the country at the earliest. The speakers also condemned the tendency to portray people belonging to the Muslim community as terrorists.
