2,400 posts abolished between June 2002 and September 2007
Several divisions closed MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board Workers’ Federation has criticised the continuous abolition of posts in the board. It has sought a white paper on the functioning of the TWD Board and details regarding appointments, retirements and vacancies. In a statement, its State vice-president, K.K.N. Rajan, claimed that around 2,400 posts had been abolished between June 2002 and September 2007 even as no new recruitment was made in that period. Stating that the annual budgetary allocation for the board was Rs.1,500 crore for the year 2007-08, he said that at least 200 divisions and 800 sub-divisions should function to shoulder the works. However, the board had been functioning with only 90 divisions since 1997, he said. “The staff members are shocked at the continuous abolition of posts during the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime that had raised its voice against the practice when the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was in power,” Mr. Rajan said. Several divisions were being closed to enable implementation of mega projects, such as the Ramanathapuram combined drinking water scheme, he alleged. Since the Government wanted to commission the project within 2 years, two circle offices, four divisional offices and 11 sub-divisional offices were created by closing offices functioning in other places. “This trend has been affecting other projects in the State,” he said. Mr. Rajan sought a white paper on the cadre-wise strength of the work force in the board since 1986, number of staff members who were promoted, number of direct recruitments, year-wise details on number of staff who retired, number of posts abolished, number of vacancies and details of “restructured” divisions.
