Offering support: The Short Stay Home for Women at Manickam Nagar in Nuthanchery near Tambaram that was inaugurated on Thursday. — TAMBARAM: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna on Thursday dedicated a short stay home for women who require care and shelter at Manickam Nagar in Nuthanchery near Tambaram. The Zonta Resource Centre (ZRC) Short Stay Home for Women intends to provide accommodation to women and adolescent girls who need shelter and they are given counselling and imparted skills to make them self-reliant. The Home is run under the Government of India’s Short Stay Home Scheme, said May George, chairperson of ZRC. For some years now, the facility was functioning out of a rented premises in Pallavaram and recently ZRC acquired land and constructed a building that could accommodate more than 30 women. At present, there were 14 women, she said. ZRC is also part of the Women’s Helpline and destitute women would be brought to the Home where they would be provided training in electronic soldering, embroidery, tailoring, mat weaving, screen printing and making of handicrafts. Women stay in the Home temporarily and in the meanwhile, efforts would be made by ZRC to re-unite them with their families. If the family reunion efforts failed, the women would be made financially-independent, Ms. George said. Some of the women were HIV infected, whom the Home takes care of permanently. ZRC Short Stay Home, which was dedicated by Ms. Poongothai, comes under the Madambakkam town panchayat’s jurisdiction. Janaki Krishnan, trustee, was also present.
