Under cover: Pedestrians at a traffic junction in Thiruvanmiyur huddle under their umbrellas during a heavy shower on Thursday. Chennai: A trough off the Tamil Nadu coast brought short bursts of heavy rain to the city on Thursday. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the trough extends from south west bay to west central bay off the coasts of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. Nungambakkam recorded 21.2 mm rainfall from 8.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. and Meenambakkam 4.4 mm. Rainwater stagnated in several parts of north Chennai and stretches of arterial roads, including Poonamallee High Road, Nungambakkam High Road and Sterling Road. As a result, it took relatively more time for motorists on many of the roads to reach their destination during the morning rush hours. Pedestrians had to wade through calf-deep water on the narrow streets of Esplanade in Broadway. Also, garbage on some of these streets was not cleared. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast generally cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain on Friday. Rainfall deficitThe normal rainfall that Chennai receives from October 1 to December 5 is about 650 mm. However, this year the city has received only 373.7 mm (43 per cent deficit) during the period.
