Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit seized various currencies valued at Rs. 15.37 lakh from a Hong Kong-bound passenger on Wednesday.
C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, (Airport), said the officials intercepted Abdulla Kader Gani of Mannadi, Chennai, on suspicion. Interrogation led to the seizure of the Euros, Swiss Francs, Hong Kong dollars and U.S. dollars, besides Indian rupees. The passenger had cleared Immigration and Customs checks and was proceeding for security check. He denied having any currency in his possession. An examination of his stroller suitcase resulted in the recovery of Euros 3,000; Swiss Francs 2,000; Hong Kong $4,000; US $50 and Rs. 50,000, together valued at Rs. 3.24 lakh. The currencies were kept concealed between the bottom and inner lining of the suitcase. The officials seized 7,500 more Euros kept concealed in the waist line of his trousers. He also admitted to having concealed a packet containing foreign currencies in his body. The packet contained Euros 13,000. Mr. Rajan said that as the passenger attempted to smuggle the currencies though concealment and non-declaration to the Customs, they were seized.
