Naxalite leader’s wife arrested in Chennai

K.T. Sangameswaran

This is the third instance of detection of naxalite presence

in the State

CHENNAI: The Q Branch police on Thursday arrested the wife of a naxalite leader of Andhra Pradesh from the city’s northern suburbs. Her husband Panduranga Reddy was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police, Q Branch, M.Ashok Kumar said Mary (22) alias Madhavi alias Kavitha was arrested from Minjur. He told The Hindu that she was also a naxalite unit member.

Along with her husband, she had come here a month ago and was staying in a rented house. Reddy used to go to Andhra Pradesh frequently. Mary had claimed that she was here for treatment.

This is the third instance of detection of naxalite presence in Tamil Nadu since 2002, when members of an outlawed outfit attempted to set up an arms training camp at Oothangarai.

Manufacturing units

Last year, seven engineering units on the city’s outskirts were found to be manufacturing parts of rockets and launchers for a naxalite outfit, based on orders placed by Thota Kumaraswamy alias Tech Madhu of Nellore, who was staying near Ambattur.

This came to light when the Andhra Pradesh police, while searching a truck at Achambedu in Mahboobnagar district, found rockets, launchers and spares packed in gunny bags. The consignment had been booked through a transport company at Mannurpet on the city’s outskirts.

Training camp unearthed

In June this year, a naxalite arms training camp was unearthed at Murugan Malai near Periyakulam after the public alerted the police. Later, Sundaramoorthy, State secretary of the CPI (Maoist) organisation, was nabbed at Tiruppur.

When contacted, a senior police officer of Andhra Pradesh said Panduranga Reddy alias Pratap of Prakasam district was the divisional committee secretary of an outlawed naxalite organisation for Prakasam and Guntur districts.

He was wanted in several cases, including one relating to an attempt on the life of a former Superintendent of Police, Ongole district, who escaped. Reddy was absconding for the more than 10 years.
