Aruna Sairam, Divya Kasthuri honoured

CHENNAI: The Nungambakkam Cultural Academy Trust conferred the title of Sangeetha Kala Siromani on vocalist Aruna Sairam, Nrithya Kala Siromani on Bharatanatyam dancer Divya Kasthuri and Nataka Kala Siromani on drama artist Crazy Mohan on Thursday on the occasion of its 38th anniversary and the inauguration of its fine arts festival. The award comprises a ponnadai, a citation and a cash prize of Rs.10, 000.
Conferring the titles on the artists, M. Balamuralikrishna lauded the trust for promoting all types of cultural forms. He appreciated the efforts made by the Academy to popularise Tamil Isai. He lit a traditional lamp to mark the inauguration of the festival, which will be on till January 13.
President Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty presided. S. Venkataraman, joint secretary, who read out a report of the academy, said a school of fine arts had been established to train the youth in fine arts. S. Natarajan, trust general secretary, said the academy was rendering yeoman service to the cause of music and other forms of fine arts. Former Director of Doordarshan Kendra A. Natarajan and dance exponent Padma Subrahmanyam spoke.
