4,500 persons held for defying orders

Anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition passes off peacefully in Tamil Nadu

PEACEFUL PROTEST: Activists of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam staging a demonstration in Chennai on Thursday.

CHENNAI: Nearly 4,500 persons were arrested in the State on Thursday for allegedly defying regulatory orders to stage demonstration to mark the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary.

In Chennai, 650 persons were arrested. All were released later.

According to reports received by the police here, peaceful demonstrations were staged by various Muslim organisations in the State.

In the city, members of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam attempted to stage a picketing in front of the High Court when they were arrested.

The police said elaborate security arrangements were made in the State. The day passed off peacefully, said Director-General of Police P. Rajendran.
