India takes bronze

KUWAIT: Priya Aggarwal’s stellar show helped India win the team bronze in the women’s air rifle event, but she missed the Olympic quota place by a whisker at the Asian shooting championship here on Thursday.

Priya shot 395 out of 400 and made it to the final in which she shot 101.8 to finish eighth. Priya missed the quota place by a mere 1.1 points, according to the Chief National coach Prof. Sunny Thomas.

The Indian team comprised Priya, Suma Shirur (393) and Avneet Kaur Sidhu (390). Avneet is the quota place holder in this event.

Tejaswini Sawant and Anjali Bhagwat shot 392 and 395 respectively in the MQS category.

The junior shooters kept adding medals to the Indian tally as Zakir Khan (534), Amanpreet Singh (534) and Kapil Tomar (505) clinched team silver in the free pistol event.

The Indians’ total score of 1,573 out of 1,800 was way below that of China, which captured the gold medal. Kazakhstan settled for the bronze medal.

Zakir Khan won individual bronze after shooting 96.8 in the finals, while Amanpreet finished fourth.

Navdeep Kaur won the third bronze of the day as she shot 393 and 102.1 in the junior women’s air rifle event, wherein Chinese shooters took gold and silver medals.
