Fake-note case: accused sentenced

KOCHI: The Manjeri Fast-Track Court sentenced on Wednesday Mohammedali, 58, alias Velli Kunjani, of Mannarkkad in Palakkad district to rigorous imprisonment for 15 years on various counts in a case of distribution of counterfeit currency. The sentences will run concurrently. The Ernakulam Crime Branch Crime Investigation Department’s Special Investigation Group II arrested him in Mannarkkad on November 18.

In 2003, the Vazhikadavu police intercepted the car in which the accused was carrying counterfeit currency for Rs. 3.5 lakh in Rs. 100 denomination.

After taking the car into custody, the police team made a head constable take the accused and the driver to the police station in the vehicle.

However, the two tried to escape in the car. The police team chased the car and stopped it.

The accused was awarded imprisonment for five years and a fine of Rs. 5,000 under Section 365 of the Indian Penal Code for abducting a police official; two years and Rs. 5,000 under Section 353 for obstructing official duty; five years and Rs. 10,000 under Section 489-B; and three years and Rs. 10,000 under Section 489-C for keeping and distributing counterfeit currency.

When arrested, the accused had 13 cases against him.

Mohammedali has been taken to the Kannur Central Jail.
