United: National Ex-Servicemen Coordination Committee observing a fast in front of the Krishnagiri Collectorate on Friday to press demands. – Krishnagiri: More than 500 students and volunteers of the Junior Red Cross took part in a rally organised by the district administration on the occasion of the armed forces Flag Day here on Friday. The rally was flagged off by Collector Santhosh Babu at the Krishnagiri taluk office. Students collected Flag Day fund from commercial establishments in the town. Mr. Babu accompanied them. The Collector said that the district administration was given a target of Rs. 13.65 lakh as Flag Day collection this year. In the last three years, the administration had exceeded the target. This time too the business community and general public in the district should contribute generously for the Flag Day collection, which was being used for the welfare of ex-servicemen and their family. Assistant Director, Ex-servicemen Welfare Office, Manivannan, and senior officials participated in the rally. Collector said that it was the duty of every Indian to remember the service of ex-servicemen who toiled in the frontiers to protect the country. The district administration would accord top priority to ex-servicemen while selecting beneficiaries for various welfare schemes. Steps would be initiated to start a rural call centre for the children of ex-servicemen in the district. The district administration distributed welfare aid to the tune of Rs. 48.12 lakh to ex-servicemen and their families in the current year. It distributed welfare aid worth Rs. 12.75 lakh to 11 ex-servicemen to start small-scale units, Mr. Babu added. The Collector distributed welfare aid worth Rs. 45,310 to beneficiaries during the programme. In Dharmapuri district, Collector P. Amudha inaugurated the Flag Day collection.
