Fishermen’s plea to government

PUDUCHERRY: The Joint Action Committee of Puducherry State Fishermen Organisations and Puducherry Meenava Makkal Kazhagam have urged the government to observe the birth and death anniversaries of philanthropist N. Selvaraju Chettiar.

In separate releases here, the two organisations said that Selvaraju Chettiar, who was born on December 7, 1901 and died on December 16, 1938, built a vast business empire and donated a considerable portion of his profits to the public.

His family donated several buildings and land to the government to be used for the welfare of the public, they added.

Members of the Joint Action Committee met the Chief Minister on Wednesday and presented a memorandum highlighting the demand.
