ALAPPUZHA: Students of T.D. Medical College here have decided to intensify their strike against the Union government’s reported move to increase the tenure of the MBBS course by one year in the form of a year of compulsory rural service. Staging a hunger strike in front of the General Hospital here on Friday, the students said the bone of contentio was the clause that they would get registered as medical practitioners only after one year of rural service, during which they would be paid a stipend of Rs.8,000 as against the Rs.15,000 they would get under the existing method, where they could serve in rural areas after being registered.
