Vaiko observes fast on dam issue

Wants governments to protect Tamil Nadu’s rights

Says Kerala should not violate water-sharing pacts

Madurai: MDMK leader Vaiko along with about 1,000 party volunteers, including 200 women, observed a one-day fast here on Friday demanding that the Central and State governments protect the rights of Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyar dam, located in Kerala.

They also wanted the Kerala government not to violate the existing water-sharing agreement between the two States.

Betrayal

AIMMK president Dr. Sethuraman, who inaugurated the fast, charged the Tamil Nadu government with betraying the people by not increasing the dam storage level to 142 ft., as directed by the Supreme Court.

Kerala is against increasing the storage level from the existing 136 ft., apprehending danger to the safety of the century-old dam and people living downstream in a few districts.

Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, wants the level to be raised to increase availability of water for irrigation in Theni, Madurai, Dindigul and Ramanathapuram districts.

New dam

Kerala has also resolved to construct a new dam, replacing the existing structure, but the move of that State has been opposed by Tamil Nadu. – PTI
