Interceptor missile test fantastic: Saraswat
HYDERABAD: A day after a state-of-the-art interceptor missile was successfully test-fired to destroy a target missile over the Bay of Bengal , its Mission Director V.K. Saraswat said the data received from various radar, telemetry, electro-optical tracking stations showed that it was a “fantastic” launch and the system performed to the best of expectations.
Dr. Saraswat, who is also the Chief Controller, DRDO R&D (missiles and strategic systems) said the interceptor, named Advanced Air Defence (AAD-02), homed on to the target missile although the latter, a modified Prithvi, climbed five km higher than the expected altitude. The data also showed that the radio-frequency seeker, used for the first time against ballistic missiles, had acquired the “target” in real time while the homing guidance too “worked perfectly.”
He said the new technologies used in AAD-02 included electro-mechanical actuators, homing guidance, the inertial navigation system, unique rocket motors with high specific impulse and specially-developed jet vanes for control of the missile during the boost phase.
