dated December 8, 1957: Labour problems

The Union Labour Minister, Mr. Gulzarilal Nanda, on December 5 suggested the drawing up of a “wage map” of India that would give information to help deal with labour problems and in fixing wages. Mr. Nanda was addressing the first meeting of the steering group of wages, appointed by the Government to study trends in relation to wages, production and prices to help the Indian Labour Conference in laying down principles to guide wage-fixing authorities. Drawing up of such a wage map, the Labour Minister said, would provide valuable guidance to Government, the wage fixing authorities and employers’ and workers’ organisations and indicate “where our deficiencies lie in the matter of data”. It was only with these details becoming available that future collection of information on systematic lines would be possible. The steering group would also have to study trends in prices and production and relating these trends to wages, he said, but in New Delhi also the problem of paucity of information faced them.
