BHUBANESWAR: ‘Shila Shilp’, a stone craft workshop, was organised by the New Delhi-based Craft Council of India (CCI) in association with the Jatin Das Centre of Art here recently. Thirty-six sculptors from Raghurajpur, Pathuria Sahi of Puri, Konark, Balasore, Khiching and Bhubaneswar participated in the fortnight long event. "The aim of the workshop is to introduce to the carvers power tools that can be used for cutting, grinding and polishing," explained the hosts. Hamish Horsley, senior sculptor in the City and Guilds of London Arts School, guided the stone carvers about the use of appropriate tools for specific jobs apart from safety measures. The workshop further familiarised the participants about contemporary products and designs in a bid to expose them to the emerging global market. It was the sixth in a series of workshops that the CCI started three years ago, it was learnt. The earlier workshops were held in Chennai, Agra, Bangalore, Pondicherry and Jaipur, the organisers stated. Mr. Siddharth Kumar, an industrial designer from Delhi, provided the new product designs. The event was sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) under the Ministry of Textiles. Handloom and Textiles secretary Ms. Anita Agnihotri and CCI representative Ms.Usha Krishna interacted with the participants while JDCA executive director Abasara Beuria was present at the valedictory session.
