BANGALORE: A tenacious young woman from Ilkal, who fought against her in-laws and refused to buckle under pressure to leave the house, won a case in the High Court that her father-in-law had filed against her. The father-in-law, Bhandary of Chitradurga, had filed a case against Preeti claming that she was an impostor and that she was forcibly staying in their house. He had sought a direction to the police to evict Ms. Preeti from his house and place her in any rescue home run by a non-governmental organisation. When the High Court some months ago ordered issue of notices to her and asked her to appear in person, Ms. Preeti had written to the court saying that if she left home, she would be locked out of the premises. Subsequently, Ms. Preeti was produced before the court under police escort. She then told the court that although she was married to Deepak, his parents had refused to acknowledge the marriage. She said Mr. Deepak had been sent out of the house by her father. The court then lodged a suo motu missing case and directed the police to trace Mr. Deepak. Even as the case was being fought out in court, the couple came to Bangalore and tied the knot before Kashi Visvesvara Temple on December 6. They filed a memo in the court stating that they were married. The two were in court along with Mr. Bhandari and a host of relatives. Justice S. Abdul Nazir before whom the case had come up, gave the couple two weeks time to file the marriage registration certificate before the court. He asked the couple to set up a house on their own. He then adjourned hearing on the case. Ms. Preeti’s relatives and a couple of police women, who had escorted her to and from Bangalore to Chitradurga during court hearings, were delighted at the happy ending.
