A visit to strengthen cultural ties

Staff Reporter

Malaysian Tamil writers promote their literature among students

PALANI: Efforts are on to propagate Malaysian Tamil literature among people, particularly students in Tamil Nadu to enable them to know the tradition, culture and lifestyle of Tamils in Malaysia as well as in South Asian countries.

Such steps will strengthen the cultural ties between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia, according to M. Rajendran, president, Malaysia Tamil Writers Sangam.

Talking to media persons after interacting with Tamil scholars and writers here on Thursday, he said that there were lot of differences in lifestyle and living condition of Tamil workers and society of Tamils in Malaysia and their counterparts in other countries.

Reflectors of real life

Several literary works such as collection of poetries, novels and short stories of Malaysian writers have reflected the life of Malaysian Tamils elegantly.

Reading those works will certainly enlighten students of Tamil Nadu to know the culture of Malaysian Tamils, he added.

‘Include in curriculum’

We have been negotiating with universities and colleges to include Malaysian Tamil literature in their curriculum.

At present, Tamil Nadu has not purchased Malaysian literature books so far.

Trust constituted

Already, a trust has been constituted in Tamil University in Thanjavur to do research on Malaysian Tamil literature.

Such research activities would be encouraged in other places also, he added. “The importance of Tamil was increasing every day.”

The team had visited Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple in the evening.

Led by the Sangam president, a delegation of 34 Tamil writers from Malaysia was on a 16-day Tamil literary tourism visit of Tamil Nadu.

The team, who visited Madurai Kamaraj University yesterday, will proceed to Pollachi tomorrow to attend a seminar in a college there.
