Kolkata: A privilege motion was moved in the West Bengal Assembly against an MLA belonging to the Communist Party of India, Sheik Illiyas Mohd., who was caught on camera by a private television channel allegedly accepting a bribe. The alleged bribe was against the promise of raising in the House the issue of children affected by the violence in the Nandigram area in the past 11 months. The raising of the issue, it was believed, would help the cause of a non-governmental organisation wanting to start a development programme in the Nandigram area. A copy of the motion along with the video footage reportedly showing the MLA — who represents the Nandigram constituency — allegedly accepting the bribe in a sting operation will be sent to the legislator. He is expected to explain himself on Monday, Speaker of the Assembly, H.A. Halim, said. The MLA was caught by a hidden camera when he allegedly accepted a bribe from journalists posing as members of the NGO. The privilege motion was moved by senior Trinamool Congress MLA, Saugata Roy, who said the MLA had lowered the honour of the House. Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee demanded the severest punishment.
