NO TOURIST DESTINATION: A water tank put up on a hillock to supply water to Mohuda village in Ganjam district. BERHAMPUR: Water supply through pipelines to all households round the clock has kept cleanliness and sanitation intact at Mohuda village in Ganjam district since more than eight years. The water tank on the nearby hillock which provides water to the village using gravity as the source of power remains a mark of identity of the achievement of the village. The villagers of Mohuda and an NGO named Gram Vikas had initiated the project. The water supply tank on the hillock gets its water from a reservoir made in the same area by tapping the hilly streams that emerge during the rainy season. Now the inhabitants of Mohuda can boast of having round the clock piped water facility, which is a dream for inhabitants of Berhampur city. The villagers themselves are maintaining this drinking water project, which makes it more unique. During the years of maintenance of the project the villagers have also learnt the importance of unity and skills to deal with conflicts. The villagers cannot let the project go defunct for a day as it is built up by their own contributions and is also managed by them. “In a way this project has empowered the villagers of Mohuda to take up decisions regarding themselves without waiting for the government machinery,” said Joe Madiath of Gram Vikas.
