CUTTACK: The striking students of SCB medical college here have called off their stir following assurance from the State Government that their demands would be met soon. The students had been boycotting classes and were on dharna since Thursday demanding return of a bond that they had submitted to the college authorities during the time of their admission. The students had submitted the bond in the form of an affidavit stating that they shall serve in peripheral areas of the State for five years after completion of their internship. During this service, they shall not apply for all India PG entrance examination but can appear the State PG entrance examination. The students of Cuttack teaching hospital were demanding return of the bond as it impedes their fundamental rights and squeeze their scope for higher education. They had also claimed that only SCB medical college students were asked to furnish such a bond while two other government medical colleges had done so. According to the college principal sources, a delegate of the students had met the State Health Secretary on Friday in this connection. “Following assurance from the government that their grievances would be addressed, the students have called off their stir”, said an official of the medical college.
