Flag Day: Collectors seek donations

THANJAVUR: A sum of Rs. 21.74 lakh has been set as target for Flag Day collection for the year, Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar said here on Friday.

He inaugurated the Flag Day collection. In 2006, the target was Rs. 20.70 lakh. The collection of Rs. 24.70 lakh exceeded the target. The fund is used to implement welfare schemes for ex-servicemen.

The Collector appealed to people to contribute liberally to the fund. S. Vijayakumar, superintendent of ex-servicemen welfare, P. Balasubramanian, welfare convener, participated.

Ariyalur

Collector V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam inaugurated Flag Day collections for the year in Ariyalur.

In a press release issued later, he appealed to members of the public to donate liberally to the cause of jawans, who toiled hard to protect the country. The donation was being utilised for the welfare of the families of soldiers, who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

In Pudukottai, Collector D. Uthirakkumaran inaugurated ‘Flag Day’ collections and in Perambalur, Collector Anil Meshram inaugurated it.

Tiruchi

In Tiruchi, the district administration has planned to mop up about Rs.1.46 crore by way of Flag Day collections during 2007, Collector Ashish Vachhani has said.

Speaking at a Flag Day tea party here on Friday, Mr.Vachhani said the district had collected Rs.51.25 lakh during 2006 against the government-fixed target of Rs.22.50 lakh. For 2007, the government has fixed a target of Rs.23.63 lakh. However, the district administration has evolved a working target of Rs.1.46 crore and would make all efforts to achieve it.

Mr.Vachhani distributed welfare assistance such as scholarships, grants and loans to 16 ex-servicemen.

Col.C.P.Medappa, Commanding Officer, 117 Infantry Battalion, Territorial Army, K.Kalyanasundaram, Assistant Director, Ex-Servicemen Welfare, participated.
