Collector’s call to panchayat presidents

Staff Reporter

Petitions seeking assistance show lack of awareness: Collector

APPEAL: Ariyalur Collector V. M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam at a meeting on Friday.

ARIYALUR: Village panchayat presidents should play a pivotal role in executing government-sponsored schemes aimed at economic and social uplift of villagers, Collector V. M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam said.

Presiding over a meeting of village panchayat presidents here on Friday, Mr. Nayagam said the Centre and the State government implemented several schemes aimed at the economic and social development of an individual or family.

A majority of village panchayats were implementing rural developmental schemes and not individual or family-oriented programmes.

The huge volume of petitions seeking individual assistance received during the weekly grievances day meetings on Mondays testified to the lack of awareness among the masses on the various schemes being implemented in the State.

Maximum utilisation

The village panchayat presidents should popularise such programmes among the economically-weaker sections for maximum utilisation of copious funds available under the schemes.

The Collector said the number of petitions at the Collectorate would come down if the village panchayat presidents implemented the Citizen’s Charter.

He appealed to the elected representatives to ensure prompt implementation of schemes such as construction of group houses, solid waste management and sanitation programmes.

As many as 37 village panchayat presidents participated in the meeting. Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, Natarajan and Assistant Director of Panchayats Muthusamy were among those who spoke at the meeting.
