“Casteist ad” condemned

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union on Friday condemned the Haryana Government’s “casteist advertisement” in the name of honouring Dalits’. “The advertisement read, ‘Haryana sarkar ka yeh ehlan, Daliton ko mile pura samman’. The scheme announced jobs for the Scheduled Castes and claimed that recruitment of 11,000 safai karamcharis in 6,764 villages was on,” said JNUSU president Sandeep Singh.

“ Whenever the issue of Dalits’ honour comes up, why is amelioration seen only in terms of opportunities as safai karamcharis? This is just an open endorsement of the age-old casteist hierarchy.”
