An opportunity to learn about the historic caves

ON A MISSION: Students of Mahatma Arts and Science College in Ariyur cleaning the park at Sitthannavasal in Pudukottai district.
PUDUKOTTAI: A cleaning camp held by students of Mahatma College of Arts and Science at Ariyur at a park in the historical rock-cut caves of Sitthannavasal, near here, gave them an opportunity to learn about the heritage value of the monument.
Principal T. Madhiazhagan traced the history of the monument, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which prompted the students to know more about the cave paintings.
Mr. Madhiazhagan said the style of architecture could be traced to the Pallava era, particularly the reign of Mahendra Varma Pallava. He explained the common features of the Sithannavasal cave and Sri Kailanathaswamy temple in Kancheepuram.
Founder-correspondent N. Mohamed Naser underlined the ASI’s role in conserving heritage monuments. The shabby appearance of the park, about four km from the college, prompted him to organise the cleaning camp.
Vice-principal V. Jaiganesh and faculty member R. Balasaraswathy said steps would be taken to conduct more camps at Sitthannavasal in future.
The students cleared the bushes and shrubs in the ‘Muthamizh Poonga.’ About 110 students participated in the camp.
