Advani attacks Sonia for demonising Modi
Neena Vyas
NEW DELHI: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani on Friday criticised Congress president Sonia Gandhi for “demonising” the “democratically elected” Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi as a “merchant of death.”
Mr. Advani, however, saw nothing wrong in the party’s former Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel describing Mr. Modi as a “Hitler.”
Talking to journalists in the Parliament House, he defended Mr. Modi’s remarks at an election rally on the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, admittedly by the Gujarat police in a fake encounter. Mr. Advani strongly objected to Ms. Gandhi’s “merchant of death” remark and her description of Mr. Modi as “beimaan” (dishonest).
On the Sohrabuddin issue, Mr. Advani said he was not aware that the Gujarat government had admitted in the Supreme Court to the fake encounter killing and disappearance of Sohrabuddin’s wife Kausarbi. “I don’t know what has happened in the Supreme Court. I say that the rule of law must be observed.”
