RAJKOT: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday called Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a “liar” for giving the people “golden dreams” with “tall but false claims of development,” but having “no sympathy” for the poor and the weaker sections. Addressing election meetings in Surat and Rajkot, Dr. Singh said the State government was creating an “atmosphere of fear” by its “discriminatory” attitude against those who opposed Mr. Modi. Gujarat, he said, had all the potential to become the number one State in the country, but its conditions were not as good as it should be. During the last nine years of BJP rule, the State remained “disconnected” from the national mainstream. Criticising the BJP’s “policy of creating divisions” on the basis of religion and caste, he said it was unfortunate that the State, which gave birth to the principle of non-violence, was being ruled by those who did not believe in “ahimsa” and the values of Mahatma Gandhi’s salt satyagraha. “You must understand, they are all liars… they have nothing to do with the principles of non-violence, friendship and sacrifice and only want to mislead the people to stick to power,” Dr. Singh said. Seeking the people’s mandate in favour of the Congress in the coming Assembly elections, the Prime Minister said development could not be achieved through “tall talks” but needed devotion and commitment to perform. This could not be expected from the BJP government, he charged. The State can become the “Golden Gujarat” as dreamt by Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel only if the Centre and the State moved “shoulder-to-shoulder.” People must remove the “liars” from power if they wanted to achieve progress and join the mainstream, he said. Attacking the Modi administration on the law and order situation, Dr. Singh made a veiled reference to the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and said people were being “needlessly killed” in the name of curbing terrorism, which was not the way of the rule of law. This was not the way to counter terrorism and the country would never support denying anyone his or her legal rights. “I believe only an atmosphere of fear and threat is being created with such actions.” Amidst cheers from the crowd, Dr. Singh said no one in the State, be it minorities, women, children or weaker sections, felt safe. “Only if you are in favour of the Modi government you are safe in Gujarat. If not, only God can save you.” The State government was not treating everyone equally, he alleged.
