Foundation stone laid for rural health centre

TAMBARAM: The foundation stone for a rural health centre of St. John Ambulance in Mylai Balaji Nagar, Pallikaranai, was laid on Wednesday.

For the past seven years, St. John Ambulance has been running a clinic in the locality, which functioned out of a two-room rented premises.

It has been decided to have a building for the clinic, said S. Ramalingam, chairman of St. John Ambulance.

Around 3,000 families live in Mylai Balaji Nagar. C.S. Veeraghavan, honorary secretary, said the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board had sanctioned a plot and the new building would be constructed at a cost of Rs.7.5 lakh.

Free treatment

Doctors would visit the clinic thrice a week and provide treatment and medicines free of cost. Some common problems residents of the locality faced were bites by insects and reptiles, besides common ailments.

St. John Ambulance vice-chairman N. Sugalchand Jain and executive committee member Kamala Parasuram were present.
