TIRUPUR: A ‘Winter sales mela’ organised by the Co-optex began at the Town Hall grounds here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Minister for Handlooms N.K.K.P. Raja said that sales expected this year was Rs. 35 lakh against Rs. 15.30 lakh of the previous year.

Sarees, shirts, churidars and a host of home textile items are on display at the mela which will be on till January 5.

Consumers can avail themselves of a discount of 30 per cent on purchase.

M.P. Nirmala, special officer and managing director of Co-optex, expressed the hope that ‘Azhagu Mayil’ silk sarees from Kancheepuram, Salem and Coimbatore and cotton sarees from Sirumugai, Vanavasi, Madurai and Paramakudi would attract customers.

She said that Co-optex had been taking efforts to attract younger generation by producing designer wears. “Product profile has been changed over the years to cater to the tastes of the public. We have introduced light weight bed sheets, starch-free cotton sarees. Compared to private shops, our rates are very reasonable,” she added.

Ms. Nirmala said that weavers’ wages had improved because of these initiatives. She said many defunct weavers’ societies had been revived and the Co-optex was able to pay the amount due in 30 days to the societies from where it procures garments and clothes.

She said the Co-optex had registered 35 per cent increase in sales till November.

Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj, and vice-chairman K. Senthilkumar among others participated.
