Illegally quarried sand seized

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: Mines Department officials have discovered mounds of illegally quarried sand at Pilapur in Madurantakam taluk.

According to sources, a team of officials from the department conducted vehicle checks in the Chengalpattu area on Tuesday. They impounded two lorries for illegally quarrying sand from the Palar near Thimmavaram.

Based on information, they went to Pilapur and found sand mounds at 20 places, estimated to be around 70 lorry loads. However, the staff of the Revenue Department said they did not know from where the sand was brought, by whom and for what purpose. The district administration was informed and it directed the Public Works Department to seize the sand.

Three lorries and an earthmover used to quarry white clay from Vattambakkam in Sriperumpudur taluk were also seized by the officials during surprise inspection on Wednesday, sources said.
