Elephant menace: experts propose three options
Special Correspondent
SRIKAKULAM: The Central Committee of Experts, constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (Elephants Board Wing) has proposed three options to tackle the vexatious issue of rogue elephants, which have been playing havoc in these parts for the last two months.
The first is to wait for 15 days more and see whether they return on their own to their habitat – the Lakheri Wildlife Sanctuary in Orissa. The logic that paddy and sugarcane harvesting would be over and force the remaining six elephants to their natural habitat.
In case this fails, four ‘Kumkis’ or trained elephants are proposed to be brought from Karnataka to drive away the pachyderms to Orissa. The final option is to tranquilise and shift them to a designated place.
These three options would be submitted to the Government of India by the committee.
