CHENNAI: Multinational companies and Indian corporate houses are denying their employees the right to form trade unions, charged W.R.Varada Rajan, Central Committee Member, CPI (M), here on Friday.

Speaking after inaugurating the South Chennai District conference, Mr Varada Rajan said foreign or domestic investors did not want the unions. The Labour Department should take steps to safeguard the workers’ constitutional right, he said.

Talking about the frequent disruption of power supply in the State, Mr Varada Rajan said the money allotted for generation was coming down every year. He also pointed out that the Government was buying power from half-a-dozen private companies at a very high price. He wanted the Government to take steps to stop the malpractices taking place in the PDS shops. Similarly severe action needed to be taken to curb the smuggling of rice meant for public distribution.Talking about Nandigram issue, Mr. Varada Rajan said the Union Government wanted to create a chemical hub in the area. It wanted to manufacture products from waste materials generated from the Haldia petro-chemical complex for which it wanted to acquire land, he said. So it was not correct to blame the State Government for the issue, he said.

Free pattas

Resolutions demanding distribution of free pattas to those living on Government lands for more than 10 years and eradication of mosquito menace in the city were passed. The three-day conference would conclude on Sunday with a rally from near the Adyar telephone exchange and culminate on North Mada Street, Tiruvanmiyur, where a public meeting would be held.

A.K. Padmanabhan, Central Committee Member, V. Meenakshi Sundaram, the party’s State Committee Member and T. Nandagopal, District Committee Member were among those participated.
