Appointment letters to 211 assistant engineers

CHENNAI: The Highways Department has recruited 211 assistant engineers.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday presented the appointment letters to the engineers at the Secretariat.
Of those recruited, 38 belonged to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes; 43 – Most Backward Classes; 64 – Backward Classes and 66 – open category. The number of women engineers was 63, according to an official release.
Highways Minister Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and Highways Secretary K. Allaudin were present.
Following up on the Chief Minister’s instruction to fill vacancies in the department, it had notified 215 vacancies for the post of assistant engineer. The State Public Services Commission carried out the selection process.
Besides, 81 junior engineers would soon be made assistant engineers.
The Chief Minister also issued orders to 35 record clerks appointed on compassionate grounds.
In response to the demand of those who had worked as daily workers for over 10 years, he granted permission for appointing 77 of them in different capacities, depending on their educational qualification.
Of them, 51 would be made road workers, two road inspectors, three drivers and 21, assistant draughtsmen.
