Seven killed in accident

Maxi-cab carrying nine Ayyappa devotees collided with truck

Coimbatore: Seven Ayyappa devotees, including two children, were killed and two children injured when their vehicle collided with a truck on the bypass road near Sulur in the small hours of Friday.

According to police, a maxi-cab carrying nine devotees from Bangalore in Karnataka was returning from Sabarimala towards Bangalore when it collided head on with a red chilli-laden truck from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh which was proceeding towards Kerala.

The victims were identified as Narayanasamy (51), Maruthi (30), Kesu (31), Logesh Khanna (34) and driver of the vehicle Logesh (38).

The Sulur police admitted Arish (14), Poovan (9), Shanu (10) and a girl Poovidha (9) to a hospital. Arish and Poovan died at the hospital, while the other two are undergoing treatment.

The police with the help of their counterparts in Bangalore were trying to locate the family of the deceased and injured and their identities were ascertained by the police with the help of the cellular phone, identity cards and other belongings. Sulur police are investigating.
