NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women’s Association has supported the Supreme Court verdict upholding women’s right to serve as bartenders. It was in tune with the fundamental rights of women not to be discriminated against in accessing employment on the basis of their gender. The Court had further specified that the security of the employee was the liability of the employer. The Association feels that the employer must take full responsibility in guaranteeing the safety of women bartenders, both at the place of work, and in ensuring safe and reliable transport. In a statement issued here on Friday, AIDWA said that as regards the lowering of the age at which youth can be appointed as bartenders from 25 to 21 years, the Court should review its decision as drinking age and age of admission into bars was 25 years; hence no person employed there should be below that age. On the recent expose by the BBC of a doctor in Noida, who had disclosed the sex of the foetus in violation of the Pre-Conception Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, the Association said that this once again brought to the fore the widespread prevalence of sex selection.
