NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Friday sought Central intervention in Nandigram and dismissal of the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government in West Bengal on the issue. Ms. Banerjee met United Progressive Alliance chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi here and apprised her of the incidents in Nandigram. “We asked the UPA chairperson why the State government should not be dismissed when several authorities from the Governor to the High Court, the Minorities Commission and the Human Rights Commission held the state action in Nandigram unconstitutional. We told her that the compulsions of coalition politics had a limit. The UPA should not succumb to blackmail,” Ms. Banerjee told a press conference. She requested Ms. Gandhi to visit the place or send a high-level UPA delegation to Nandigram. “I met the Prime Minister on Thursday and requested him, as also Ms. Gandhi, that the Central government should send a high-power team to Nandigram for a spot assessment.” Ms. Banerjee wanted the Central Reserve Police Force and the Central Bureau of Investigation strengthened so that they could function independently.
