Germany at its menacing best; Korea sitting pretty

S. Thyagarajan

Kuala Lumpur: Who will be the challenger to Germany in Sunday’s final is a poser that is haunting hockey aficionados here.

The Germans are playing at their best form and have booked their 15th final in the Champions Trophy.

That the eight-time champion secured a place in the final with a match to spare is testimony to the professional efficiency and consistency displayed by the squad under new coach, Marcus Weise.

Keller stands out

Everyone in the team fits his part, and plays it to perfection. But no one is as electrifying on the field as the fluent all-rounder Florian Keller. It is a spectacle to witness the Germans working up to the rival area with eye-catching one-touch passes.

The possible scenario is a Germany-Korea clash for the Cup. With 11 points, all Korea needs is a win over Great Britain on Saturday.

That will take its tally to 14. If Korea, by chance, is held to a draw, and Australia beats Germany in the last match, then the Aussies will have another shot at the trophy won last in 2005 at Chennai.

If both Korea and Australia are stuck at the points position as they are now, 11 and 10 respectively, the Netherlands can upstage them with a victory over Pakistan to take its total to 12.

The permutations and combinations is an interesting exercise no doubt, but one must give a thought to the plight of former champion and donor of the trophy, Pakistan. At this stage, it looks as though the team may miss the next edition at Rotterdam.

Points tally:

Germany: 6-5-1-0-21-9-16; Korea: 6-3-2-1-16-11-11; Australia: 6-3-1-2-10-8-10; The Netherlands: 6-2-3-1-18-16-9; Spain: 6-2-2-2-14-13-8; Great Britain: 6-2-0-4-7-17-6; Pakistan: 6-1-2-3-11-16-5; Malaysia: 6-0-1-5-9-16-1.

(Read as played, won, drawn, lost, goals for, goals against, points.)

Saturday’s matches:

Malaysia v Spain (1.35 p.m.); Great Britain v Korea (2.05 p.m.); Pakistan v Netherlands (3.35 p.m.); Australia v Germany (5.35 p.m.).
