Raghunath wins gold

KUWAIT: Rifle shooter P. T. Raghunath shot brilliantly to earn India’s first individual gold medal at the Asian shooting championship here on Friday.

Raghunath scored 598 out of 600 to make it to the final before striking the gold with a score of 103.1, ahead of World Cup champion Gagan Narang, in the men’s 10m air rifle event.

His scores helped India gain the team gold.

India’s third gold medal of the day came in the junior women’s 50m rifle prone team event when Lajja Goswami (582), Annu Tomar (581) and Saini Devi (577) totalled 1740. Kazakhstan finished second for the silver medal with a total of 1738 and China (1737) settled for the bronze.

Lajja’s total of 582 earned her the bronze medal.

Team bronze

Kanya Babbar shot 684.3 in the junior men’s air rifle event to win bronze and also helped the squad comprising Babbar (583), Bibaswan Gaungulee (576) and Minit Shah (577) to the team bronze.

In the women’s event, Shagun Chowdhary missed the final in a four-way tie-shoot for two berths in the final. Shagun had a series of 17, 21, 23 for a total of 61, as did Janejira Srisongkram of Thailand, Elena Struchaeva of Kazakhstan and Yi Chun Lin of Chinese Taipei. Elena and Yi scored on the first shot while Shagun and Janejira missed. Elenawent on to clinch the gold medal. The silver medal came from junior men’s trap team comprising Asher Noria (93), Prithviraj (97) and Arimardan Shahi (99) who totalled 259 out of 375.
