KOCHI: Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said here on Friday that religious fundamentalism was posing a threat to Kerala’s secular fabric. Political parties and the media would have to be sensitive to the issue, he said while releasing the logo to mark the 40th anniversary celebrations of Ernakulam Press Club. Kerala was a model for social harmony in the past. Religion was secondary, but, of late, religion had begun to occupy the primary place in the mind of Keralites. The Minister called for a change in the mindset of Keralites towards development issues. The State needed support for economic growth. The neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh had moved very fast in the last two decades. The Minister observed that the reach of the media, especially the print media, was phenomenal in Kerala. People were well aware of their rights as well as political issues. The print media continued to play a vital role in society. Images and not issues were more important to the visual media, he observed.
