Weekend sale of Malnad produce
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Vanastree is a collective of women farmers from in and around Sirsi in the Malnad region of the Western Ghats that has been attempting to preserve and enhance the rich local seed wealth of the area, document the biodiversity of the home gardens and to help with small-scale enterprises that are conservation oriented and bring out the varied talents of the women, many of whom have emerged as strong leaders.
Vanastree looks at how best the forest home gardens can continue to provide a source of food to local communities as well as help them augment their income by value addition. The collective has been encouraging seed exchange in a bid to conserve the rare and unusual vegetables of the home gardens.
The collective is holding a sale of a range of products from the home gardens besides wild forest foods, traditional snacks, spices, honey, herbs, indigenous seeds, hand-sewn patchwork quilts and wild date palm yoga/gym mats.
The sale is on Saturday and Sunday at 4, Ashley Road, off Brunton Road, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
