Lost her husband in an accident in November 2000

NEW DELHI: Maintaining that a precious life was lost and the driver involved was guilty of a negligent act, a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal here has awarded Rs.26 lakh compensation to the widow of a mechanical engineer who was killed in an accident in 2000.
The Tribunal directed the National Insurance Company Limited, the insurer of the offending vehicle, to pay the amount within a month along with an interest of 7 per cent per annum.
V. Suresh was killed in an accident on November 4, 2000, in South Delhi on the highway to Agra.
He was cleaning his windscreen to clear the mist after parking his vehicle on the left side when the truck, being driven by Rajendra Kumar, hit the vehicle killing Suresh on the spot. He was going to Agra along with his family on a short trip.
The Tribunal rejected the insurance company’s plea that the amount was on the higher side saying the deceased was only 34-year-old though the average life expectancy was 70. The fact that he was a mechanical engineer working with a multi-national company was also considered by the Tribunal while awarding the compensation.
