Fine on motorists fills State’s coffers Law & order

Rs.62 lakh was collected as penalty from erring motorists in 11 months, writes S. Anil Radhakrishnan.

Petty cases being registered by the traffic police against erring motorists in the north and south traffic sub-divisions in the city are turning to be a major source of revenue for the government.

An all-time record of Rs.62,73,400 was collected as penalty towards the motor vehicle petty cases registered during the first 11 months of the year. The number of petty cases registered by the traffic police during the period was 43,793.

In addition to traffic police personnel, the local police and personnel of the Motor Vehicle Department carry out vehicle checks and fine motorists violating traffic rules. The traffic wing in the capital collected Rs.51,51,650 from erring motorists in 35,474 cases registered during 2006. The number of petty cases registered in the north sub-division was 18,324 and the amount collected was Rs.26,27,100. In the south sub-division, a sum of Rs.25,24,550 was collected in 17,150 petty cases. In 2005, Rs.39,61,050 was collected as penalty by the traffic wing towards 27,054 petty cases registered. A sum of Rs.40,45,650 was collected as penalty towards 29,587 cases registered in 2004. In 2003, a sum of Rs.37,71,300 was collected in 28,201 petty cases.

Incidentally, the salary towards the police personnel, excluding the officers, attached to the traffic station comes to Rs.28.34 lakh a month. Road safety experts said at least 10 per cent of the amount collected as penalty should be used for road markings.

A penalty of Rs.100 was collected in a majority of the petty cases registered during this year. Those found indulging in rash and negligent driving were fined Rs.1,000, traffic officials said.

“The increasing number of petty cases point to the fact that the traffic police personnel in the capital are strict in enforcing the rules. The enforcement of rules has also helped in bringing down the number of road accident deaths,” P. Mohanan Nair, Assistant Commissioner of Traffic, South, said.
