New nomenclature for Nursery, KG

Staff Reporter

Will now be called “Pre-school” and “Pre-primary” respectively

Education Minister assures of sufficient seats in pre-school class in all recognised public schools

No interview or interaction this time for the parents or the child for the purpose of admission

NEW DELHI: “Nursery” class will now be known as “Pre-school” and “KG” as “Pre-primary”, said Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Friday, adding that from the next academic year beginning April 2008 a child should be at least three years of age on March 31, 2008, for securing admission to pre-school and of at least four years on that day for securing admission to pre-primary.

Addressing a press conference to clarify the Delhi Government’s stand on school admissions, the Minister said the admission process would start very soon.

No re-admission

He said children admitted to nursery or pre-school last year would be promoted to pre-primary class this year without having to go through the process of re-admission.

Also he assured that there would be sufficient seats in the pre-school class in all recognised public schools and every child completing three years of age on March 31, 2008, would be given admission there.

“This should remove doubts in the minds of parents that their child studying in the nursery or pre-school will have to seek re-admission to get into the pre-primary class,” he said.

Mr. Lovely also declared that there would be not interview or interaction this time for the parents or the child for the purpose of admission and parents can only be called to school for the limited purpose of verification of documents.

“That too,” he added, “can only be done after the admission list has been duly declared by the school.”

Guidelines to be followed

The Minister said the guidelines prescribed by the Delhi Government would be applicable to all the recognised private schools including minority schools irrespective of whether they fall under the domain of the Directorate of Education, Municipal Corporation of Delhi or NDMC.

Criteria to be clear

On how the schools would go about the process of admissions, Mr. Lovely said: “The school managements have been given liberty to formulate their own criteria for admission for pre-school and pre-primary class which has to be clear, unambiguous and non-discriminatory, and the criteria has to be got approved by the Directorate of Education and should then be made public to the desirous parents.”

He said the admission criteria should have a minimum of three parameters on the basis of which the child has to be evaluated on the scale of 100 points.

“There will be no cap on points assigned to any one parameter,” he said, adding that “the minority schools would be allowed to add minority community status as one of the parameters so that they are able to give preference to the community to which the schools belongs.”

Wide public support

Claiming that the proposed admission process had received wide public support, the Minister said it had been ensured that autonomy and transparency co-exist. He said schools not having pre-primary class had been given three years to start the same.

Under the common schedule for admission, Mr. Lovely said, it had been decided that the distribution of registration forms would take place from December 15 to 31 and they would be accepted till January 7, 2008.

The first list for admission will be declared on February 1 and the submission of fee will take place from February 15.
