Letters to the Editor
This refers to the passage of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Bill in Parliament. As model employers, the Central and State governments are duty-bound to provide such facilities to their employees which will help to discharge their duties towards their parents. How can a Central government employee staying with his aged parents in Kerala discharge his responsibilities if he is transferred one fine morning to Assam? The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry should direct various departments to keep this in mind while effecting transfers. Jacob Abraham,Kochi It is unfortunate that the young are being forced to look after their parents. Let us be pragmatic. Let parents set aside a part of their earnings in their prime itself so that they do not have to depend on their children in the evening of their lives. If it is not possible, it would be better not to beget children. R. Narendran, Chennai
